INFORMATION ON THE LEGAL ENTITY IDENTIFIER:
A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a unique identification code mandatory for all entities trading with securities, stocks and bonds.
LEIs are designed to identify legal entities. The LEI was introduced to illuminate ownership structures of active companies and to increase the transparency of the global financial market. This legal requirement applies to all companies regardless of size.
The LEI is a 20-digit alphanumeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard.
All legal entities regardless of company size who wish to carry out transactions in European financial markets involving any kind of securities or derivates need to register a Legal Entity Identifier.
At the end of 2017, the Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2017/105 came into effect, requiring the use of an LEI number for reporting all derivatives transactions since January 2018.
All companies participating in the global financial market are now identified, networks made more transparent.
As an example, LEI numbers are already being used under the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) to identify counterparties to over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives. Additionally, an LEI number for issuers has been mandatory since the beginning of 2017.
The Legal Entity Identifier is standardised with ISO standard 17442 and consists of a combination of 20 numbers and letters.
The first four numbers reveal the identity of the issuing Local Operating Unit (LOU). This unit acts in the name of the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) who outsources issuance and allocation of the LEI to certain authorized issuing agencies.
Numbers 5 and 6 always have a value of zero.
The numbers/letters seven to eighteen are unique identifiers to each entity.
The final 2 digits are checksum for verification purposes.
The process can be done online and only takes a few minutes. After entering the company data, deciding on the period of validity of the LEI and selecting the preferred method of payment, a confirmation email will inform you about the status of the order and the initiation of the registration process.
Within a few hours, the new LEI will be sent to you in a second email, completing both the successful registration and the publication on the GLEIF website.
Any person authorized to sign in a company may apply for a Legal Entity Identifier.
Legal Entity Identifiers can be applied for at official LEI Registration Agents (RA).
The LEI will then be issued by a Local Operating Unit (LOU) and assigned by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), who also lists the LEIs on their website.
LEIs are assigned by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) and are issued by a network of Local Operating Units (LOU).
The Legal Entity Identifier is valid for one year from the first date of issuance and may be renewed automatically upon expiration. The regular renewal of the Legal Entity Identifier is necessary to ensure that all company information affiliated with the LEI is up-to-date.
You can apply for a Legal Entity Identifier for your company if you are either
a. an authorized representative with signatory powers of the applying company, or
b. recognized by another authorized representative of the company to apply for the LEI.
LEI numbers are issued by LOUs (Local Operating Units). A Local Operating Unit is an organization authorized by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation GLEIF to issue LEI numbers and works closely with Registration Agents (RA) to assist organizations in applying for LEI numbers.
