THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS TO THE LEI:

  • What is a LEI?

A Legal Entity Identifier – LEI – is a globally valid and standardized identification number for all players on the financial market.

It identifies distinct legal entities that make financial transactions and gives a clear overview of ownership structures.

Since the year 2018 this identification number is legally required for all legal entities in the EU executing transactions on the financial market.

The reason for introducing the Legal Entity Identifier was the lack of transparency of many firms and their opaque ownership structures at the international financial market. In order to solve this and to create more trust in the market, the Legal Entity Identifier was introduced.

  • Since when and why a LEI is required?

EU regulations stipulate that all legal entities need a Legal Entity Identifier to engage in financial transactions (this also applies to one-man-businesses) since January 3 rd , 2018. No security trading can be executed without a valid LEI number.

The LEI number shows all relevant business data (name and location of the business) and therefore creates more transparency when it comes to financial transactions and also makes it possible to uniquely identify legal entities.

  • How long does it take to apply for a LEI?

Registering a LEI will only take a few minutes and the LEI will in most cases be processed on
the same day. If you register before 4 p.m. the LEI will be issued on the same working day
and can then already be looked up in the LEI data bank.

  • What does the LEI number mean?

Companies can be uniquely identified by the LEI and ownership structures of legal
entities engaging in the financial markets are disclosed.

This ensures increased transparency for legal entities trading on financial markets.

  • How is the LEI number set up?

The Legal Entity Identifier Code – LEI – is a unique and globally valid alphanumeric
20-digit code based on the ISO 17442 standard. Each legal entity can have only one
    LEI.
The Legal Entity Identifier is based on the ISO 17442 standard and consists of a
combination of 20 numbers and letters.

    Numbers 1-4
The first 4 numbers indicate the LOU, the Local Operating Unit, identifying the unit
that issued the LEI. This unit acts in the name of the GLEIF as the GLEIF outsources
issuance and allocation of the LEI to certain authorized issuing agencies.

    Numbers 5-6
    reserved characters, always 00.

    Numbers 7-18
Unique number based on the ISO 17442 standard, created by the LOU for each LEI.
This section shows numbers and letters. This is the code that clearly identifies the
    legal entity.

    Numbers 19-20
The final two digits check that the issued LEI is compliant to the ISO 17442 standard.

  • Where to apply for a LEI?

Legal Entity Identifiers can only be registered at official LEI registration agents, like
Register LEI since all data of the legal entity must be verified.

  • Who assigns a LEI number?

LEIs are assigned by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation and issued by a
network of official registration agents, like Register LEI.

  • Who needs a LEI?

LEIs are compulsory for all legal entities in the EU since 2018 who are engaging in
financial transactions. Without a LEI no legal entity can trade on international financial
    markets.

  • How much does a LEI cost?

The prices for the registration of a Lei can be found in our price list above on our website.

  • How much does it cost to extend an already existing LEI?

The prices for the renewal of a Lei can be found in our price list above on our website.

  • How long is a LEI valid?

The LEI will be valid for 12 months after the issuing or renewal date. The LEI will be rendered
invalid if not renewed during this period (ENTITY STATUS = LAPSED). This will make it
difficult for your business to engage in financial transactions and regulatory reports.

  • What do LEI status information mean?

A LEI data set gives the following information:

ISSUED: information has been verified and a LEI has been assigned.
LAPSED: LEI data is no longer valid. More than one year has passed since
    the last verification.
MERGED: indicates that an entity has merged with another entity and no
longer exists as an individual legal entity.
RETIRED: the entity no longer exists and was not merged with another entity.
PENDING TRANSFER: a LEI that is in the process of being transferred to
another Registration agent (LOU). When the process is completed, the status
    will be changed to ISSUED.
PENDING ARCHIVAL: a LEI that is just about to be transferred to another
    LOU.
DUPLICATE: a LEI that has been issued for an entity already having a LEI.
One LEI will be declared void and given the status DUPLICATE.
ANNULLED: A LEI that has been declared faulty or void after being issued.

Ihre LEI Nummer sowie jede andere weltweit vergebene LEI Nummer können Sie bei uns kostenlos suchen & abfragen oder auch über die offizielle LEI Suche der GLEIF.

  • Who can apply for a LEI?

You will need to meet the following requirements.
    a. You are an authorized representative (signatory powers) of the applying company
and therefore authorized to apply for a LEI.
    b. You are authorized by another authorized representative of the company to apply for
    the LEI.

  • Who issues LEI numbers?

LEI numbers are distributed by the GLEIF, but does not issue them itself. LEIs are
issued by a network of authorized operators acting as decentralized issuing agents.
Register LEI cooperates with ubisecure and partners as Registrations Assistant.

  • Where can I find LEIs?

You can look up your LEIs or any other LEI free of charge as well as on the official
    LEI finding site gleif.org.

LEI-Info

A LEI is a unique identification code required for all legal entities trading with securities,
stocks and bonds. The Legal Identifier Code – LEI – is a 20-digit alphanumeric code based
on the ISO 17442 standard.

LEIs make it possible to identify each legal entity in the financial markets. The reason for the
LEI to be introduced was to reveal ownership structures of its players. This will help to
increase transparency on global financial markets in the future.
